Scholar of Islamic architecture, specializing in the history of architecture in Islamic Spain, especially landscape and palace architecture. Among her scholarly works are monographs on gardens in Islamic Spain and an annotated anthology of primary sources on Islamic visual culture. As of May 2020, D. Fairchild Ruggles is a professor of Islamic art and architecture in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.
