The key design principles for this airport terminal with a 3,000,000 per annum passenger capacity stemmed from the fact that it is located in a first degree seismic zone: the tubular arch form of the structure was chosen primarily to create a sound and protective structural solution. The construction strategy was similarly based on local conditions; to build a contemporary structure within local means, using local materials and local building strategies in innovative ways. The steel structure was produced and constructed entirely with the use of local know-how, creating a functional, aesthetic project that is appropriate for the city’s needs.
