Following the 2001 earthquake, members of a women's collective launched an initiative to rebuild housing in the Dadar region. Funded by a local NGO, the project design was prepared in conjunction with artisans, and its implementation was carried out by regional committees. A center offered training to local builders and dispensed earth blocks, enabling over 1,200 families to build 2000 Bhungas within 24 months. The circular form of the houses prevents them from splitting during earthquakes. The project generated employment and provided urgently needed secure habitation.
